This 45-item standardised assessment of parent's attitudes toward parenting was designed to identify troubled parent-child relationships. Scores derived from the PSS allow a clinican or researcher to define, compare and communicate levels of parenting satisfaction in 3 domains:

• Satisfaction with the Spouse/Ex-spouse Parenting Programme 

• Satisfaction with the Parent-Child Relationship 

• Satisfaction with Parenting. 

The PSS has also proven useful in making child custody decisions and in conducting family therapy.
